隆次はアパートに住み始めて4年になる。今はピエロのサンドイッチマンをしている。心優しい隆次であるが、生まれつき言葉が不自由なため、遅い自立であった。隣近所には杏子や堀田夫婦が住んでいた。ある日、堀田夫婦が痴話喧嘩をしているときにピエロ姿のまま止めに入った。それ以来4人は親しくなり…。
