平成二十六年盆。久方ぶりの里帰りを果たした純朴青年ケンイチは、本家の墓参りを済ませた後に、隣村に暮らす親戚の綾子叔母さんの家を訪ねた。叔母さんと顔を合わせるのは、ケンイチが少年の頃以来、もう、十二年ぶりだった。「んまあ大きくなって…」門をくぐると、相も変わらずお美しい叔母さんの笑顔に優しく迎えられた。ガキの頃には感じなかった、オトコとしての何かが、下腹部でくすぶり始めた。懐かしい話しも一段落したところで、ケンイチは叔母にこう問うた。「そう言えば、叔母さんは、どうしてずっと独身なんですか…？」と。
